TDCJ is increasing the hiring bonuses for officers signing a one-year contract by $1,000 in targeted rural prisons and other units that are having shortages.  This would make the signing bonus $4,000 for many new hires.  There are fifteen prisons in this program who need to hire correctional officers. For instance Dalhart unit has 205 positions and currently they have 70 openings TDCJ is currently aggressively recruiting applicants for all of the empty positions.  Full time guards have a starting and salary of $29,200 and can rise to $38,880 after seven and a half years.  If an employee leaves the job before fulfilling their requirement they will be responsible for repaying the bonus.
